We are just a few short months away from the opening of Clarksville’s Gateway Park. The four-acre park includes an adventure playground, splash pad, restrooms, stage, and an event space known as the ‘egg lawn’.
The long awaited opening of the park also means the start of Clarksville’s first-ever outdoor movies and concert series. When the park project was set in motion, a brand new state-of-the-art outdoor movie theater system was included in the budget for the park. Until now, the department would have to rent the equipment each time to show an outdoor movie, on top of other licensing costs. Now that the department has it’s very own system, workers plan on showing a movie on the first Friday night of each month (May-October). The movie nights are free and open to everyone.
“We are always looking for opportunities to expand our recreational offerings for our residents,” said Ken Conklin, Marketing & Programming Coordinator for Clarksville Parks. “Now that we have this beautiful new park to host events, we are hoping to have free activities here as much as possible.”
Conklin says the department is working on finalizing it’s movie schedule and should be releasing it soon. All movies will be family-friendly and open to everyone. The parks department is also hoping to find local food vendors interested in setting up during the movie nights, as well as sponsors for the events.
The Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department is also planning on hosting several small concerts at Gateway Park. Near the new ‘egg lawn’ is a covered stage area built specifically for special events and concerts. Conklin says the parks department will be holding concerts on the third Friday of every month (May-September), and that the department is working with Triangle Talent in Louisville to schedule local artists.
“We’ve met with representatives from Triangle Talent, and they assure us that we are going to find some great local talent to entertain our residents in Gateway Park,” said Conklin. “We hope to have great crowds for each and every event.”
Due to the addition of the outdoor movies and concerts, the Clarksville Parks Department is looking to hire a few ‘Special Event Specialists’ for part-time/seasonal work.
